SECRETION AND FUNCTION OF GASTRIN

Abstract
The recent production of synthetic gastrin-like polypeptides has stimulated new interest in the effect of these. substances, as well as gastrin, on the secretion of gastric juice. A specific. population of epithelial cells of human gastrointestinal mucosa was identified by immunofluorescent techniques to contain gastrin. Release of gastrin from the antral mucosa into the circulation consequent to a variety of stimuli, ¢¥is inhibit when the intragastric pH is reduced. Three naturally occurring peptides, gastrin, cholecystokinin-pancreozymin and caerulein, share the c-terminal amino acid sequence. They also share several physiological actions, but the relative potency of the compounds on a specific physiological effect depends on the rest of the molecule. Pentagastrin was more potent than histamine in stimulating acid and pepsin secretion, and the rate of the responses was faster with pentagastrin than with histamine.
